Hey Gorgeous,

Let’s talk a bit about how to pick a lip color for your permanent makeup lip procedure. First of all congrats on your decision to have it done! YAY!  You will find having your lips done is a handy convenience and a confidence enhancer. Eliminating the need to worry about your appearance during important unexpected moments.Like an old romance showing up at the local laundry mat on laundry day.

Just kidding, I know you have more important things to do than worry about the opinions of a past romance.

In case you didn’t know, there are two options in permanent makeup lip procedures. You can choose either the look of lipstick, lipstain, lip blush or a natural look.

I only have experience in creating natural looking results. However, I have been advised that the process is similar. With the exception of a lipstick look has a HIGHER CONCENTRATION of pigment implanted in the lip area. So based on that advice, I would imagine that the process of picking a color may be somewhat similar.

The Amazon Affiliate linked images of lipgloss below were hand picked by me to give you a visual peek into what are some of the appropriate colors to try. As you see there are a rose, peachy orange and even a deep or darkish red lipgloss. Yes, the sky is almost the limit. Keep reading to learn more.

Why Lip Gloss?

You want to pick a nice looking lip gloss or lip stain color that looks appealing over your natural lip color. Think translucent like watercolor instead of opaque like lipstick or acrylic paint.

The beauty of picking a lipgloss or stain is you will be able to see how your natural lip color shines through the pigment. Although this method is not an exact science, it does creates the highest chance for the most accurate results.

The reason I say this is because results will vary depending on the training, experience, including the eye for matching and blending color by your artist.

The Amazon picks below are great lip stains to check it out perfect examples of not bluing, browns or taupes in the colors. Very safe colors to use and keep in mind while looking for the best color for your lip and skin tone.

So What Else Do I Need to Consider?

Well, the lips are very vascular which means your lips have natural bluing in them from blood vessels running through them and that your lip material is very thin. With this in mind, the best way to pick a natural look lip color would be to pick a lipgloss color without any mauve (bluing), browns or taupe in them. Doing so will only cause you problems.

You want base colors that will not add extra bluing in your lips on top of the natural bluing naturally in your lips. If you disregard my advice it the extra bluing n the mauve, brown or taupes will cause the color in your lips to appear more bluish in tint, and that is not the desired result you want.

So as of late, the biggest issue I see with my clients is finding an appropriate gloss at all. So many of the gloss and stain colors are very nonnatural looking colors more in extreme colors that are not the best choices for a permanent result. I keep seeing fluorescent tangerine orange in my mind with flashbacks to an early 80’s Wham Video.

Fashion is always changing, so you probably do not want to pick a high fashion color. Picking a softer more natural color would be wiser and will stay in vogue much longer. Think classic and timeless looks.

I find that Clinique is pretty good and offers more natural looking lipgloss and stain colors. Another option is to mix two or three of your favorite lipglosses over the lips and ask your artist to match the combined colors. I turned away the option in the past but find it is becoming a necessity to find the perfect color for my clients.   Try testers and other options before you purchase.

The image below shows more examples of safe color choices. Don’t worry we never use iridescent the image is used as a reference to color options only.

Down to the Nitty Gritty of Picking A Lip Gloss Color.

Ok this what you have been waiting for Good base colors and tints. Good base colors are rose, corals, peachy orange and pinky peaches. Nice lip tints and glosses over the base color are oranges, peaches, pinks, bright pinks, rose, reds, deep reds and raspberry (magentas).

If you have an issue with brown or darker patches (spots) naturally on your lips, then try soft pinks and bright pinks to balance them out. It usually does the trick nicely. This technique gives the most natural or all lips colors. If you wish to add another color over the pink that evened out the look of your lips. You can once it’s fully healed.

After you pick your favorite lip color wear it for three weeks or more, if you still like the look of it, then its time to book your lip procedure. If not then its time to find a new color or modify the one you have.

You can always ask to see your artist to have them help you figure out what is and isn’t working.

Once you have had your lip procedure done, and it is past the healing stage. I highly recommend that you keep either lip gloss or chapstick handy to keep your lips moist. Applying a lip gloss or chapstick will help enhance your permanent makeup lip color to be more vibrant and glossy looking instead of just a matt effect.
